Apple Fusion Drive
In 2012 Apple introduced their fusion drive.
Back in 2012 a 3TB SSD was well over $1,000.
Apple had a great idea to put a small SSD in the computer and keep the operating system and directory in the SSD and keep your files in a hard drive. This gave you the high speed of a SSD and the cheap storage of a hard drive.
If you have a Fusion drive we need both your hard drive AND the SSD.
If you send us just the hard drive, none of your files will have names, dates or folder structure. We will only be able to recover your files with numbers in place of names.
We have seen many times the Apple Genius replace the failed hard drive and reload the operating system. What this does is replace your old directory with a new blank directory. You old directory is unrecoverable once it is overwritten with a new blank directory. The customer brings us just the hard drive and we can only recover files with numbers.
The SSD for the Fusion drive on an iMac is mounted on the back of the Motherboard.

They are the exact same part number.The biggest difference is the picture of the Apple on the left drive (The right drive has no Apple picture).This little Apple Logo adds about $50 to the part cost.
When we recover a hard drive most of the time we have to fix the drive to get any data out of it.It is the exact same procedure to fix the drive on the left vs. the drive on the right.
The only difference is the drive on the left is Apple Mac HFS or APFS format and we need to extract the data on an Apple HFS or APFS format machine.
The drive on the right needs to be extracted on a Windows PC machine in NTFS or FAT32 format.
The Apple Time Capsule has a hard drive in it.
